“Green” climate scenario to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. The demand for Hydrogen is expected to rise to 1,300 million metric tons, which is equivalent to more than twice the energy the world uses today in the form of natural gas. Hydrogen also plays a crucial role in decarbonising electricity systems through renewable energy and battery-based energy storage. The industry with steel and cement sectors is expected to be the second-largest consumer of clean Hydrogen, and in transport, Hydrogen mainly focuses on shipping and aviation.

Clean Hydrogen growth will require commitment from countries and companies. Some countries today have made progress in setting industrial decarbonisation policies.

Countries are setting net-zero targets to end their contribution to global warming, which opens opportunities for Green Hydrogen development in Developing Countries to translate objectives into action. Before Hydrogen is scaled-up in a cost-competitive way, countries will have to overcome regulatory, technological, market and financial barriers, such as high costs of electrolysers, reduced return on investment, a limited specialised workforce, complex logistics, high flammability, and lack of approved guarantee of origin certification.
