IFC’s EDGE Green Buildings Market Transformation Program (Webinar)

The Clean Energy Solutions Center, in partnership with the UN Foundation’s Global Partnership for Energy-Efficient Buildings, hosted this webinar on the International Finance Corporation (IFC) EDGE Green Buildings Market Transformation Program: a low-cost green building design and certification tool.
A member of the World Bank Group, IFC launched this program to rapidly increase the construction of green buildings in emerging markets. More information is available at www.edgebuildings.com.
The webinar explored the components of the EDGE Green Buildings Market Transformation Program, which engages financiers, developers, regulators and homeowners through EDGE (“Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies”). EDGE is a low-cost, easy-to-use Web application that reveals solutions at the early building design stage to reduce energy, water, and material consumption by 20%.

MARK HOPKINS, UNITED NATIONS FOUNDATION
Mark Hopkins is an internationally recognized expert in energy efficiency with 40 years of experience in policy reform and program development. He is the former Executive Vice President and chief Operating Officer of the Alliance to Save Energy. His reas of expertise include building codes, appliance standards and Energy Star; building design and upgrade, government facility energy management and energy saving performance contracting; and utility regulatory reform and industrial energy productivity. In the early 1990s, Mark created the Alliance’s international program that helped to improve energy efficiency in 25 transitional and developing countries, especially in the areas of district heating, municipal energy management and in water and wastewater systems. More recently in the private sector, he developed a new clean energy business model for Lockheed Martin Corporation. He directs the UN Foundation’s efforts to incorporate strong energy efficiency commitments into international agreements and helps countries deploy energy efficiency through the UN’s Sustainable Energy for All initiative. He is a Member of the Board of Directors and Treasurer of CLASP, the Collaborative Labeling and Appliance Standards Program, the ClimateWorks international best practice hub. Mark is currently organizing a Global Partnership for Energy-Efficient Buildings.
MARCENE D. BROADWATER, GLOBAL HEAD OF CLIMATE STRATEGY AND BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT, IFC CLIMATE BUSINESS DEPARTMENT
Marcene D. Broadwater is Global Head of Climate Strategy and Business Development of the IFC Climate Business Department. Previously, she was Global Head of Climate Change and Sustainability for the Infrastructure and Natural Resources division of IFC. In her capacity as Climate Global Head for the Infrastructure and Natural Resources Division, Ms. Broadwater was responsible for growing IFC’s climate business across the power, transport, water, telecom, oil, gas and mining sectors. Ms. Broadwater has headed initiatives to expand renewable energy and energy efficiency to infrastructure businesses in developing markets with an emphasis on expanding clean energy investments beyond traditional grid tied power generation. Ms. Broadwater has years of experience within IFC in the Oil, Gas, Mining and Chemicals Sector and recently served as IFC’s Country Manager for Peru and Bolivia.
PRASHANT KAPOOR, PRINCIPAL INDUSTRY SPECIALIST, IFC CLIMATE BUSINESS DEPARTMENT
Prashant has more than 15 years of experience delivering sustainable solutions in the built environment across public and commercial sectors. As an Industry Specialist based in Washington DC, he guides IFC’s global green building investments in developing countries with a particular focus on financing low carbon developments, sustainable building materials, ESCOs, and green mortgages. Under his leadership, IFC developed investments in hotels, hospitals, housing, and commercial buildings that are energy and water efficient and use sustainable materials, generating a deal flow of over $500 million to date. To help clients make a quick cost-benefit analysis and to set a standard by which IFC could qualify a building as “green”, Prashant developed an easy to use analytical tool called EDGE. Prior to joining IFC, Prashant worked as a Director at WSP consultants in London. He played a leading role in planning Masdar City, an innovative, low carbon city of 40,000 in Abu Dhabi currently under construction. He also developed a strategic plan for Dubai including designing a new green building regulatory system and various pathfinder low carbon property programs for corporate real estate, institutional investors, and developers.
