Public Consultation Launched on Revising the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive

The European Commission has launched open consultation to consider ways in which building renovation can be boosted in terms of the quantity of renovation projects as well as the degree of ambition or ‘depth’ of renovation. The consultation seeks to understand how to attain a highly energy efficient and decarbonised building stock by 2050 while enabling more accessible and affordable financing for building renovation under the recovery and resilience plans using the €750 billion funds in the recovery package. The 2020 Renovation Wave presented by the European Commission in 2020 sought to double the annual energy renovation rate of buildings by 2030, and highlighted the need for the necessary regulatory, financing and enabling measures to achieve this. Aligning EU Member States Long-Term Renovation Strategies with a revised Energy Performance of Buildings Directive and a revised Energy Efficiency Directive that ensures 2050 Climate-Neutrality Objectives is seen as a viable path forward.
