Tracking Incremental Energy Efficiency Investments in Certified Green Buildings

The Climate Policy Initiative explores the alignment of the building sector with carbon reduction pathways and outlines several recommendations to address the energy efficiency of the building stock, including:

  • Standardized reporting on energy efficiency investments and the energy performance of buildings
  • Continuous monitoring of assets against environmental performance metrics, benchmarks and net-zero climate scenarios
  • Large scale retrofitting in developed economies with certification systems aligned to retrofitted buildings
  • Certification of new construction in developing economies to leverage massive low-carbon investment opportunity

Europe, North America and Asia account for 95% of the total certified floor area and 97% of financial flows across residential, commercial and industrial sectors. The Climate Policy Initiative indicates they represented €4.3bn, €2.65 and €2.29 of financial flows in green-certified buildings in 2020, respectively.
